How to Plan a Surprise Proposal in Montauk (plus a Real Proposal Story from Last Summer)

February 7, 2026

Montauk is one of the most romantic places in the Hamptons to propose — dramatic cliffs, quiet beaches, and unforgettable sunsets. Last summer, I had the honor of photographing one of the sweetest surprise proposals, and it was planned so perfectly that the bride-to-be had absolutely no idea what was coming.

If you’re dreaming of proposing in Montauk or anywhere in the Hamptons, this story will give you inspiration and a few helpful planning tips along the way.

A Proposal Disguised as a Dinner with Friends

The boyfriend wanted the moment to feel natural and emotional — not staged — and he knew his girlfriend would be dressed up if she thought they were going out to dinner in the Hamptons. So he told her they were meeting her closest friends for dinner that evening.

What she didn’t know was that her friends were already waiting… hidden nearby.

I also arrived early and hid with them, camera ready. The goal was to stay completely invisible until the big moment happened.

On their drive, he casually suggested stopping at a local Montauk beach to “check it out real quick.” Just a spontaneous detour before dinner.

That’s when everything changed...

THE MOMENT SHE REALIZED

As they walked toward the beach, everything felt normal. Then suddenly, he stopped… turned to her… and went down on one knee.

She was completely in shock. Tears, hands over her face, laughing and crying at the same time — the kind of reaction every couple hopes for. I captured those first raw seconds while staying hidden, giving them space to live the moment together.

After several minutes of hugging and kissing, she finally noticed me.

That realization always makes people laugh:

“Wait… was this being photographed the whole time?!”

Surprise Friends + Champagne Celebration

Once the proposal sunk in, her friends came out of hiding with champagne and glasses. The celebration turned into hugs, cheers, and so many joyful photos.

Pro tip: Champagne always makes proposal photos better. đźŤľ

I always recommend hiding it in a backpack — it’s easy, discreet, and adds such a fun, celebratory touch to the images.

Other Ways I’ve Helped Plan Surprise Proposals

Every proposal is different, and I often help plan the logistics behind the scenes.

Sometimes, I work with the moms ahead of time. They meet me at the beach before the couple arrives and set up a small picnic with flowers and champagne. While this looks beautiful, it does mean the bride-to-be may realize what’s happening as soon as she sees the setup — which can be just as special in its own way.

Another couple planned a “sunset picnic” date. The girlfriend thought they were simply watching the sunset together. After a while, she walked closer to the water, and he followed her… then dropped to one knee and surprised her right there by the ocean.

Simple. Romantic. Perfectly Montauk.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal in Montauk

Planning a surprise proposal at the beach is exciting — and a little nerve-wracking. After photographing many proposals in Montauk and the Hamptons, here are my best tips to help everything go smoothly and beautifully.

1. Create a believable excuse

Dinner plans, a sunset walk, or a casual stop at the beach keep everything feeling natural and prevent suspicion.

2. Book your photographer ahead of time

Summer is extremely busy for photographers in the Hamptons. Booking in advance guarantees your date is available and gives you time to plan the details together.

3. Bring champagne (and hide it!)

Champagne always makes proposal photos more fun and celebratory. Hide it in a backpack so it stays a surprise.

4. Choose a quiet beach or time of day

Golden hour offers the best light and fewer crowds, creating a more intimate moment.

5. Don’t rush the moment

Stay in it. Hug, laugh, cry. Those first few minutes create the most emotional and meaningful photos.

6. Trust your photographer as your secret teammate

Your photographer helps with timing, positioning, and cues so everything unfolds naturally. I help coordinate where I’ll be, when to start shooting, and when friends should come out so the surprise stays perfect.

7. Have a simple signal for your photographer

A small gesture like touching your pocket or fixing your hair can be the silent cue that it’s happening.

8. Position her with the wind, not against it

Montauk beaches are often windy. I always guide the guys to place their girlfriend facing the water so the wind flows her hair back instead of into her face. This allows me to capture her true reaction instead of hair covering her expression — and creates much more romantic images.

Because this is the beginning of your forever — and it deserves to be remembered exactly as it felt. 💍✨
